I would like to tell you that I had a doctorate or master’s degree in English before I started making money online, but that just isn’t the case. If you really want the truth, I fell onto it by pure accident. I wasn’t really looking for a job. I was just bored.
I ran into a website called ‘Helium‘ advertising that they pay you to write on your favorite subject. I thought for sure this site must be a hoax and tried it anyway. I have received a few small payments from these guys, but it will never make me a rich woman.
Helium is the perfect opportunity to get you started in online writing for money. You don’t have to worry about an angry customer if your first stab at it isn’t very great. If you want critiquing or help, they have a massive forum filled with friendly experience writers who are eager to help.
Once I knew where my weaknesses were, I spent a lot of time researching and learning what I didn’t know. I found that Cute Writing is an excellent resource for the technical side of writing as well as other information I’m sure you’ll use at one point in your career. If you would like to take some free online writing courses, College Degree has more than 50 available. I also have a resource page with sites, links to free ebooks, tools, and programs (some free and some not). Be sure to make use of them!
This part of the process can seem like a pain when you just want to make money, but learning and honing your skills before you work with a client will ensure you have a spotless reputation from the front.
From there, I moved over to working directly for specific clients and getting paid for everything I wrote.
